Automatic Voter Registration

Here is the Center’s research on automating the voter registration process. Our country has used many different forms of automated registration for decades, such as opt-in Motor Voter Registration. The most recent innovation is opt-out registration at government agencies as eligible citizens have interactions with them.  In Oregon for example, the Department of Motor Vehicles simply registers people without asking them, but them sends them a letter telling them they are being registered. If they don’t want to be registered, they are asked to return a postcard opting out.
